Reader Brian Mahoney points out that not only does the May 2 election day conflict with NHL playoffs, it’s also tax day in Canada. Because April 30 falls on a weekend, the government extended the deadline for filing 2010 tax returns until the Monday. The decision to extend was made well before the government fell.
How does this factor mitigate? I’d guess there will be a few people too busy filling out their T4s to get out to the ballot box and a few more who are reminded how little they enjoy paying taxes. So, on both counts, a minor boost for the Conservatives.
